Courting candle holders go back about 300 years. When a young man went to visit his sweet heart her parents would light the candle. When the candle burnt down to the top of the holder it was a sign for the suitor to depart However it was adjustable. If the girl's folks thought the young man had promise they could move the candle upward ,thus lengthening his stay. This candle holder has had hundreds of versions in the last 3 centuries .This version is forged in the traditional manner, with hammer and anvil. There is no modern electric welding to detract from its old world charm.
